Pirana STP Performance Enhancement

Advancing effluent quality with nanobubble technology

Summary

Pirana Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), one of the largest in Gujarat, faced persistent issues in achieving desirable effluent quality despite mechanical aeration. The presence of high BOD and COD levels, foul odor, microbial contamination, and inefficient sludge handling led to environmental and operational challenges. Avior Life Sciences initiated a nanobubble technology pilot to demonstrate its capacity to significantly improve water quality. The results validated nanobubble intervention as a transformative solution for STP performance enhancement and energy efficiency.

Problem

Common STP challenges faced at Pirana included:

→ High COD (145.88 mg/L) and BOD (72 mg/L) levels in treated water.
→ Low dissolved oxygen in treatment tanks.
→ Persistent odor affecting nearby areas.
→ Over-reliance on chemical disinfection.
→ E. coli >1600 MPN/100ml and Total Coliform present.
→ Energy-intensive aeration processes with limited efficiency.
→ Excessive sludge accumulation and poor dewatering.

Recommendations

Based on the success of the pilot, Avior Life Sciences recommends:
Full-scale integration of nanobubble systems at Pirana STP.
Zonal deployment for pre-aeration, final polishing, and
sludge pits.
24×7 monitoring of DO and BOD levels to optimize
performance.
Reduction in chemical usage and associated costs.
AMC collaboration for replicating across Ahmedabad’s decentralized STPs.

Visible Difference

→ Noticeable clarity improvement in water.
→ Odor significantly reduced within hours.
→ Floating sludge visibly broken down.
