Date

25 December 2017-31 March 2018

Introduction

Gas-filled bubbles smaller than 200 nanometers, known as nanobubbles, improve oxygen transport and quality in water treatment. Their application in recovering a eutrophic lake with low oxygen levels, a high amount of algae, and poor water quality is examined in this case study.

The Problem

Emirates Golf Club, Dubai, December 2017. Emirates Golf Club: 1,000 m3 of groundwater per day from the nearby Salenic well is received by a 15,000 m3 ornamental pond, leading to multiple issues.
  • Summertime algal blooms and unpleasant smells
  • Green or yellow, muddy water
  • High concentration of microorganisms and nutrients
Faecal Coliforms’ existence in the Ponds serves as a sign that water has been tainted by diseases and germs generating viruses or bacteria, which can pose possible harm to human health, plants, and animals in contact with this water. Anaerobes are pathogenic bacteria and need carbon dioxide, organic matter, nitrogen, sulfur, ammonia, or phosphorus to endure. Nowadays’ available aerators are expensive, ineffective, and do not quickly disperse the dissolved oxygen uniformly over the whole pond; they cannot find a solution to the issues.

Recommended Solutions :

On the site’s analysis and the water analysis results. The Emirates Golf Club management team received a 90-day treatment of the pond using the Avior Aqua Nanobubble generator.

Implementation :

On December 25, 2017, Avior Aqua’s nanobubble generator was installed in the Emirates golf club’s pond, After installation, changes in the lake were thoroughly studied, and positive changes were seen during an implementation period of 3 months. The results of which are shown as follows:

Fecal Coliforms: >200 cfu; E. coli: >200 cfu; COD: 352 mg/L; dissolved oxygen: 4 mg/L; nitrogen: 36 mg/L

Results :

Time taken for transit and visible improvements
Before
After
Before
After
The following (visible) outcomes were seen:
  • The odor disappeared.
  • Dissolved green algae were seen.
  • Observed the color of the water change.
  • The visibility of the water increased.
After 3 months of operations, we can observe the following (visible) results:
All odor issues have been fixed.
Green algae that had dissolved vanished.
Water visibility < 2 meters.
Birds and aquatic life had returned to the area.
These positive outcomes come from:
  • The microflora of the lake has returned to its natural balance.
  • Maintaining the activated self-purification process and assisting in the reduction of organic sludge at the bottom of the pond.
  • The availability of dissolved oxygen throughout the water column has increased and stabilized.
  • Preventing harmful algal blooms in the future.

Conclusion:

Rapidly elimination of microorganisms and unpleasant odors. Lowers potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen levels by 55%.
Increases vision by more than two meters and reduces COD by more than 76%.
Restores the natural state of the lake and stops upcoming algal blooms, with DO levels consistently above 6 mg/L.
Achieved without the use of chemicals, biological agents, filtration, ultrasounds, dredging, or noise using a completely natural, sustainable solution.
